  17. Please read the AUG96.TXT file included with this update. It contains
  18. a detailed list of the new virus definitions and a summary of current
  19. virus activity around the world.

  23. **  Microsoft Word Macro Viruses                                    **
  24. **********************************************************************
  25. Macro viruses use the WordBasic macro language to infect and, in some
  26. cases, implant binary viruses into host programs.  Currently, there
  27. are several known macro viruses: Concept is the most widespread.
  28.  
  29. Macro viruses reside within Microsoft Word document and template
  30. files.  Notably, macro viruses are platform-independent. They can
  31. infect documents and templates on the DOS, Windows, Window 95,
  32. Windows NT, and Mac operating systems.
  33.  
  34. All current versions of Norton AntiVirus detect and eliminate the
  35. macro viruses. 
  36.  
  37. If your installed version of Norton AntiVirus 3.0 (NAV.EXE or
  38. NAVW.EXE) is dated earlier than February 23, 1996, or your installed
  39. version of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 (NAVW32.EXE) is dated
  40. earlier than December 1, 1995, you need to upgrade. The Norton
  41. AntiVirus upgrade installs the NAV Macro Engine automatically, which
  42. detects and eliminates macro viruses.
  43.  
  44. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus 3.0 program:
  45.  
  46.   * Download the file called UPDATEME.EXE
  47.   * Place the file in an empty directory and execute the file
  48.     to extract.
  49.  
  50. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 program:
  51.  
  52.   * Download the file called NAV95PCH.EXE
  53.   * Place the file in an empty folder and execute the file
  54.     to extract.
  55.  
  56. Step-by-step instructions are included with each file.  If you
  57. need additional instructions, a FaxBack service is available
  58. at (541) 984-2490 to assist you.

  60. UPDATEME.EXE and NAV95PCH.EXE are located where the monthly virus
  61. definitions files update are normally found. It is available for
  62. download from the Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites,
  63. CompuServe, America Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call
  64. Customer Service at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.

  67. **  Disappearing Hard Drives                                        **
  68. **********************************************************************
  69. Several viruses, such as Frankenstein and Stoned.Empire.Monkey, cause
  70. your hard disk to "disappear" when booting from a clean floppy disk.
  71. This occurs because the virus either encrypts or relocates the hard
  72. disk partition table (a vital part of the disk's system area). 
  73.  
  74. All "appears" well when you boot from your hard disk because the
  75. virus actives in memory and tells DOS where the partition table is
  76. relocated, or acts as the partition table itself. If you boot clean,
  77. DOS can't find the partition table and the virus isn't around to give
  78. directions. You may receive an "Invalid drive specification" or
  79. similar error when trying to access the hard disk.
  80.  
  81. When you boot clean so NAV can repair such an infection, the hard
  82. disk will not appear in the drive list. Don't worry! NAV, with the
  83. default options enabled, will bypass DOS and look directly at the
  84. hard disk to check the system area for infection, no matter what you
  85. scan. For example, scanning a floppy disk will scan memory, the
  86. floppy disk, and the system area of the hard disk. If such an
  87. infection is discovered, you are alerted appropriately.
  88.  
  89. NOTE: IDE hard drives larger than 1024 cylinders often require the
  90. use of additional driver or overlay files. If you have such a drive,
  91. you may need to include these additional files on your Norton
  92. AntiVirus Rescue Disk to ensure recovery from virus emergencies. Make
  93. sure that any special driver or overlay files for your hard drive,
  94. which are part of your normal system configuration, are included on
  95. your rescue disk.
